Rubber Mulch
Recycled rubber mulch has many applications. When installed on playgrounds, it serves as an impact-reducing safety surface. For residential installations, a minimum four-inch layer is recommended. Commercial applications, often regulated by state agencies, typically require a minimum six-inch layer. For landscaping purposes, a two to three-inch layer is generally sufficient.
Recycled rubber mulch is available in three grades. The premium shredded grade resembles shredded tree bark and is both attractive and soft underfoot, making it popular for landscape and playground applications.
The standard nugget grade consists of roundish, irregularly shaped chunks ranging in size from 1/4″ to about 3/4″. This lower-cost material is often favored for playground applications.
Both grades of rubber mulch are effective in equine environments, such as riding arenas or exercise walkers. For equine applications, smaller particles, typically 1/4″ to 1/2″, are often mixed with several inches of sand. In this context, recycled tire mulch is referred to as “footing.” When properly installed, equine footing provides cushioning that protects animals from injuries and helps reduce dust in horse arenas, round pens, or exercise walkers.
